Plant Michigan Green is powered by the Michigan Nursery & Landscape Association, sponsor of Michigan’s two U.S. Department of Labor–registered Green Industry apprenticeship programs and administrator of the Michigan Certified Landscape Manager and Michigan Certified Landscape Contractor programs. These credentials help professionals build rewarding careers—and help property owners identify experts they can trust.

  • Yes, and it pays more than most people assume. Grounds maintenance workers earned a median of $19.27 an hour as of May 2025, and overall employment is projected to grow 5 percent from 2025 to 2035, faster than the average for all occupations, with about 162,500 openings projected each year. Tree trimmers and pruners average $26.91 an hour, or $55,970 a year. Michigan's Green Industry spans landscape design, installation, maintenance, nursery production, tree care, irrigation, and management.

  • You can start without one. Most entry-level Green Industry roles train on the job. From there, two registered apprenticeships offer a structured route: the Michigan Nursery and Landscape Association sponsors Michigan's Nursery Technician Apprenticeship Program and Landscape Management Technician Apprenticeship Program, both registered by the U.S. Department of Labor, each running one year with 2,000 hours of on-the-job training and 144 hours of related classroom and online instruction.

  • Michigan has two. Both the Nursery Technician and Landscape Management Technician programs are registered with the U.S. Department of Labor and sponsored by the Michigan Nursery and Landscape Association. Apprentices earn a wage while training with guaranteed increases as skills develop, and finish with a nationally recognized, portable credential. Department of Labor figures put post-completion employment retention at 93 percent. Participation requires both the employer and the individual to register.

  • Yes, many Michigan Green Industry employers hire seasonal and part-time help during the school year and summer, and high school horticulture programs are available across the state.
